{"id":190,"date":"2010-03-10T07:31:02","date_gmt":"2010-03-10T13:31:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.drbilltoth.com\/blog\/?p=190"},"modified":"2010-03-10T07:31:02","modified_gmt":"2010-03-10T13:31:02","slug":"recession-no-barrier-to-botox-cosmetic-procedures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.drbilltoth.com\/?p=190","title":{"rendered":"Recession no barrier to Botox, cosmetic procedures"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Recession no barrier to Botox, cosmetic procedures<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nBy Madison Park<em> CNNHealth.com Writer-Producer\u00a0 <em>March 09, 2010<\/em><\/em><\/p>\n<p>The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery released figures Tuesday: Almost 10 million cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures were performed in the United States in 2009.\u00a0 <strong>Despite the recession, Americans shelled out $10.5 billion to get pretty.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Richard Fleming, a facial plastic surgeon and co-director of The Beverly Hills Institute in California said a <strong>fresher look enhances job prospects.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom executives to everyday working people in the corporate world particularly, they look at improving their appearances as an investment in their future, because appearance does count,\u201d he said.\u00a0 \u201cIf they don\u2019t look as good as the person with similar qualifications, my bet is on the <strong>person who looks more rested and looks better<\/strong> than the one who looks tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fleming said <strong>even the unemployed shell out the bucks to get cosmetic procedures.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile people are out of work, they\u2019re not doing it for personal reasons because they want to look better,&#8221; he said.\u00a0 <strong>&#8220;They\u2019re doing it because it\u2019s more competitive than it was before the recession.\u00a0 That\u2019s their stimulus &#8211; spending money trying to get in the workforce.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>About 85 percent of the total procedures were nonsurgical ones, according to American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.\u00a0 These types of procedures, such as <strong>Botox and chemical fillers to reduce wrinkling<\/strong>,\u00a0 cost less than major surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople might not have money for more involved procedures which last longer,\u201d Fleming said.\u00a0 \u201cBut <strong>they do have money for fillers, Botox, that kind of thing<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The top three nonsurgical cosmetic procedures\u00a0 of 2009<\/p>\n<p>1.
