Going to work

Going to work for a large company is like getting on a train. Are you going sixty miles an hour or is the train going sixty miles an hour and you’re just sitting still?” –J Paul Getty

In the end what matters more is the Legacy you leave for others to follow. Our lives are either an example or a warning.

What Saved America?

After the 1929 crash, a work ethic driven by a need to serve God with our nation’s gifts saved the day. Among those gifts in the decades following was charity, and it radiated from close-knit families and neighborhoods determined to persevere with what they had. Credit was something the corner store gave you till payday, interest-free, on your word alone.

A WORK ethic. It’s called a WORKplace. HomeWORK. A NetWORK. NetWORKing. NetWORKmarketing. artWORK.

Hard WORK spotlights the character of people: some turn up their sleeves, some turn up their noses, and some don’t turn up at all.” –Sam Ewing

Reading vs Doing

Ever have prospects stuck in the paralysis of “Anal-ysis”? A rep who attends every training, takes copious notes and never speaks to a single prospect? A business partner who obsessed over details and yet did nothing to build the business?

Acquiring knowledge is easier than developing skills. Knowing what to do and doing what you know are very different. If being competent in a skill was simply a matter of reading and understanding it, we wouldn’t need “Drivers Ed” or “The Road Test” part of getting a driver’s license.

Remember the first time you drove a car? Remember how awkward it seemed. It takes some practice to acquire new physical skills but it is not very complicated. You can read about starting from a parking place on a hill…and the outcome of a hill start depends on balancing engine power against clutch control. Being too aggressive with the controls results in wheel spin or a jerky start; being too hesitant results in the engine stalling or excessive clutch wear.

The feedback is consistent with the action and learning occurs after taking action.

You and I can read a thousand books on Swimming, Learn all about human anatomy & physiology. Read another thousand books on the physical properties of water. And how do you and I learn to swim? By getting in the water and having somebody show us!
What drives us to learn to swim…now that’s the important part!

The “WHY” is the driving force in learning to drive, swim or build a business.

If it’s learned it can be unlearned

Yesterday’s post provoked strong repsonses.

ALL fear is just a learned response. We are born with only 3 fears; fear of abandonment, fear of loud noises, and fear of falling.

Fear of abandonment is the only truly innate fear. As infants we must know on some level that we cannot survive without assistance from adult humans.

Fear of loud noises we learn…babies in the womb can hear…and when a loud noise scare mom…and mom flinches and produces flight or fight chemicals in her blood stream…the baby learns to connect the loud noise and moms responses….hence learning to be afraid of loud noises.

Fear of falling…pregnant moms are physically off balance and constantly “catching themselves” from falling…which produces the same flight or fight chemicals…which the baby connects to the sudden jerky movements…thus learning to fear falling.

So we’re born with only 3 fears and every other fear you have today was/is learned! And if you’re still above ground you can learn a new response, you can un-learn your fears in one of two ways;

The antidote to fear is Gratitude and Action. Grateful that you learned it because in some way it served you. And from a place of gratitude you can dismiss the fear.

And the very best way to defeat fear is through Action. DO the thing you fear and attach a new meaning to it. Very often we find; “Gee that wasn’t so bad afterall”

Re-member you’ve done it before.

Fear is the enemy of humanity

Good Morning Team – FEAR may be the worst enemy of the human species. And it’s been with us since the beginning of time. Every ancient major religious text writes about it and the damage it causes. It is fear that will turns your dream of success into an ugly nightmare that haunts you into the paralysis of anal-ysis.

Most children are pretty fearless creatures – we watch as our 3YO jumps off things, dives head first after a ball or climbs up a stack of shelves or other things we would never consider. Teenagers and even young adults continue to display mostly fearless attitudes. Remember how invincible you were as a young person?

In a bizarre cruel twist, many people grow more fearful as they age. I say bizarre because wisdom (which usually comes with age)should make us more apt to see the Truth in a situation. Unfortunately many people attach incorrect meanings to events.

And the Truth is – fear can be defeated because ALL fear is just a learned response. We are born with only 3 fears; fear of abandonment, fear of loud noises, and fear of falling. And the last two we learned from mom’s reaction to outside stimuli. Every other fear you have today was/is learned! And if you’re still above ground you can learn a new response, you can un-learn your fears in one of two ways;

The antidote to fear is Gratitude and Action. Grateful that you learned it because in some way it served you. And from a place of gratitude you can dismiss the fear.
