As fuel prices rise and technology continues to improve, electronic or virtual meetings will grow in popularity. Here’s a few key points from fellow business coach, Tom McCarthy. Bold emphasis is mine.
Subject: Presentation Survey Results
For over 20 years we have been a market leader in helping people design and deliver presentation that get people to take action. Last week we sent out a request for you to participate in a survey designed to help us understand how effective you think the presentations you have to attend are.
The breakdown of people answering the survey was Executives 28%, Managers 17%, Salespeople 27%, Engineers 16%, and Operations 5%.
55% of the attendees said that at least half of the presentations they attend are conducted “virtually”….Probably the most sobering news from the survey is that 45% of the respondents said they listen a maximum of 5 minutes to presentations that they do not find interesting and 73% are completely tuned out after 10 minutes.
Conclusions:
Virtual presentations are becoming more and more a day to day reality. Customers and audiences do not have patience for presentations that don’t deliver. Every day, presentations are being delivered that fall short of their goal and quite frankly waste everyone’s time. But there is hope. If you work at it, you can be one of the elite presenters that enjoys presenting and delivers their presentation with a charismatic presence that drives the audience to action.
–Thomas McCarthy & Associates
As presenters we have the first 2 to 5 minutes to tell our story – powerfully and succinctly, THEN tell them what’s in it for them and then share what “it” is.
Remember, it’s not what you say it’s how you say it that produces action and at the end of the day it’s what the audience remembers that is most important.
and finally – you can’t say the right thing to the wrong person and you can’t say the wrong thing to the right person.
