Tithing is…

Good Morning Team – Wow. Yesterday’s message touched a raw nerve regarding tithing. The simple answer; Tithing is a practical application of Faith.

You can literally drive yourself crazy reading about it – I did. It’s a lot like reading about nutrition because there is a lot of conflicting information from a lot of sources. And it’s a lot like learning any skill – you can just read and anal-yze it or you can DO it and learn it a whole lot quicker. (example: Swimming or riding a bike)

The BIG MISTAKE regarding tithing = Many people struggling with poverty consciousness mistakenly think that money shrinks when you give it away. They think (100% – 10% = 90%). Sadly, the tighter you squeeze your money, the more compact it becomes. The more you cut back, the less you have. Dickens’s mythical figure “Scrooge” vividly demonstrates the consequence of being tightfisted, stingy, hard, and parsimonious with one’s money.

When I started tithing – I too mistakenly thought “I can’t afford to tithe” and “If I tithe I won’t be able to pay my bills”. At the time I was broke and I had tried everything else to change my situation, so I saw tithing as a “last resort”. AFTER I started to tithe – THEN my financial situation began to improve….later when I was making a lot of money I “tested” the law and stopped tithing – my income shrunk almost immediately.

The Truth is; giving money actually produces more money. Tithing is a money multiplier. Giving literally magnifies, multiplies, and exponentializes money.

When you give without the expectation of receiving – knowing that you will – then and and only then your money returns to you 10 fold or more. And the giving must be a percentage of your income….putting 2, 10 or 20 bucks in the collection plate is NOT tithing and does not produce the larger rewards that tithing does. So if you can only start at 1% then start there and as your situation improves you work your way up to the magic number of 10% of your gross income.

One crucial component is that you must tithe to that which gives you “Spiritual Nourishment”. For many this will be their church, temple, synagogue etc. For others it could be the charity they are personally engaged with.

Tithing is a great way to Make a Difference. Go behind the scenes of most great fortunes, you’ll find a common pattern—the more they gave, the more they got. Conversely, show me a person having a difficult time financially and it is very likely they’re not tithing.

Bottomline; Start at whatever level you are at…just start…and the miracles of tithing will come because Tithing is a practical application of Faith.

Incredibly Bold and Beautiful

Good Morning Team – We were powerfully moved and Blessed by events that occurred at church yesterday and feel compelled to share. 1st – 4 brief comments so you know where we’re coming from;

1. It is our Belief that Tithing is a practical application of your Faith, that it must be to your source of spiritual nourishment, and that we must give without the expectation of receiving, knowing that you will receive in return an amount greater than you have given.

2. The Parable of the Talents has many lessons for us regarding being a good steward, that “talents” can be our skills, and that right actions vs just thoughts are richly rewarded. Thinking, talking about, or wanting to do good is not the same as actually DOing good.

3. The concept of “Pay it Forward” – Rediscovered and made somewhat popular by Benjamin Franklin and super popular in 2000 by the movie with Kevin Spacey & Helen Hunt – means that a “good deed can be repaid to a 3rd party instead”.

4. The economy has resulted in significantly reduced giving to churches while community needs have increased.

The Pastor delivered a clever & brilliant sermon on the Parable of Talents, and had us do a simple but powerful exercise relating to giving and receiving. Then he performed the boldest, most powerful, most loving practical application of Faith I/We have ever witnessed at church; a “Reverse Offering”. The offering baskets were passed out full of envelopes, and every man, woman and child was instructed to take an envelope – a total of 11,000 envelopes for the day. And in that envelope was a $5 bill with 3 simple rules for its use;

1. You can’t spend the money on yourself.
2. You can’t give it back to the church.
3. You have to tell us what you did with the cash.

Imagine the processional effect of 11,000 people focused on Doing Good for others!

After several hours of great discussions before, during and after dinner with our kids, friends, and their kids – regarding the lessons learned and how to best Make a Difference we agreed to Pay It Forward by pooling our resources with other church members and have purchased individual bags of VitaMeal on behalf of those Team Members whom we are aware have recently demonstrated the best use of their “talents” in Serving Others in their communities.

I/we realize that email and blog posts are limited communication tools, lacking emotional and nonverbal cues and yet it is our sincerest desire that readers find our interpretation of yesterday’s events inspiring enough to take action today and Make A Difference in your family and your community. Be Creative.

Peace,
Bill & Julie

Balance and Neutrality

No thing is either good nor bad except that we make it so” –William Shakespeare

In every adversity therein lies the seed of equal or greater opportunity.” –Napoleon Hill

When we’re neutral, when we can see that there are two sides to every coin or situation, then you and I can appreciate that there is a “plan” to our lives and if we’re having a “situation” we can immediately begin to seek the “good” or benefit that will come of the situation.
