Good Morning Team – Strong leaders tend to polarize their audience for and against.
A year ago much was said about Steve Jobs and his autobiography. As the trend has been for the past 100 years – what made the news was largely “dirt”. What people talked about mostly was negative, nasty and unpleasant because that’s what sells newspapers, magazines and generates viewership.
Does that mean Apple as a company is bad or good? Does that mean Apple employees are “evil” like Steve? Does that mean Apple products are bad? How about Pixar Pictures? How about the people that buy Apple’s products or watch Pixar’s movies – are they all “evil” too?
Lately, much has been said regarding Arnold Schwarzenegger and his autobiography, and of course much of the news and talk is negative, nasty and unpleasant.
Does that mean his film company is bad or good? Does that mean all of the employees of the state of California are “evil” like Arnold? How about the people who eat in his restaurants, go to his resorts or buy his DVD’s – are they all “evil” too?
Arnold came to America with a bag of clothes and about $100 bucks. He couldn’t speak english and therefore his first film was dubbed. Joe Wieder built an empire around him. And then Arnold built his own. He went on to acquire two bachelor’s degrees, two masters degrees, built a real estate and film empire worth an estimated 7 Billion, married the “princess” of the “royal” American family and of course was elected Governor.
I have tremendous respect for his accomplishments, especially for his leadership of the President’s Council on Fitness and his support of the Special Olympics.
Bottomline: Strong Leaders tend to polarize their audience for and against….in part because Admiration and Envy are close relatives of Idolatry and Jealousy.
At the end of the day;
“A man’s reputation is what other people think of him; his character is what he really is”
–Abraham Lincoln (also no stranger to polarizing his audience)
…and we all live in glass houses.

It’s not such an out of the box question anymore.
The 2012 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine was awarded today to Sir John B. Gurdon and Shinya Yamanaka for work that revolutionized the understanding of how cells and organisms develop.
Gurdon and Yamanaka share the prize jointly “for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent” — the ability of a cell to differentiate into another cell type, according to the Nobel committee.
“These groundbreaking discoveries have completely changed our view of the development and cellular specialization. We now understand that the mature cell does not have to be confined forever to its specialized state,”
“Textbooks have been rewritten and new research fields have been established. By reprogramming human cells, scientists have created new opportunities to study diseases and develop methods for diagnosis and therapy.”
Bottomline: Today the world will be told once again that your DNA does NOT determine your destiny. The “Epi-genome” determines your destiny and it can influenced both by science and especially by the choices you make. In short;
“Your past does not equal your future” You are a creation machine and can create a new future by making new choices today.

This is how I choose to remember Steve Jobs – today – one year after his passing. I can relate to his comments because I too am aware that everyone of my many choices, failures, and successes have prepared me to be who I am today. In short;
“I’ve traveled the territory, drawn a few maps and I’m happy to share them”

And what do you DO with it?
Consider for a moment a traffic accident, witnessed by four people standing on four different corners. Each of these eyewitnesses will have seen the same event, but from a slightly different angle. Therefore, each of them will be telling the “truth” when they testify, but each one’s story will be distinct from the others. In some cases witnesses even report different cars or different colored cars and
yet they all believe they are telling the Truth.
It’s now football season; and every monday morning the quarterback, coaches, players, refs, people who were in the stands and people who viewed the game on TV will argue what happened in the game the previous day. They all watched the same game…from their perspective and thru their emotional and mental filters.
Additionally, any number of “experts” will be happy to tell you what occurred in the accident or what occurred on the playing field….based upon their filters and resulting perceptions.
In fact, the glass is always completely full of two liquids and there are always three sides to every story; His, Hers and the Truth – which usually lies somewhere in between. Human beings filter ALL of the data input through our own experiences and ultimately choose our own perceptions. So why not choose to interpret all the data input in a way that supports and empowers you TO BE magnificent, to improve your life, your family’s life and your community?
Because you can. And what if you were to? What if you did? Who could you help? How great would that be?
