Knowledge is NOT power.

Only application of knowledge is power.

My post yesterday’s resulted in a flurry of emails noting that “What is Success” may be “incorrectly” attributed to one of my favorite author’s – Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Often I receive the same kind of emails regarding this one:

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask ourselves: ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Nelson Mandela

Here’s what I do know for sure; Nelson Mandela said it, Marianne Williamson wrote it and we all “get to” live it. In our daily lives what matters most is what we DO with the knowledge we have. Thinking about it, talking about it, or arguing the history of it are NOT the same as actually applying it.

Hence; Application of Knowledge is power.

Birthday Reflection

Success and Wealth can be measured many ways and as it happens birthdays are often the time for reflection so here’s one of my favorites definitions;

    What is Success?

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

–Ralph Waldo Emerson

One Perspective on NYC

Good Morning Team – This past week I had the privilege of staying at The Plaza Hotel in NYC – all expenses paid – a perk for a year’s worth of hard work. And like many people I had a warped perspective of NYC prior to actually experiencing the people. Similar to the bias we often experience regarding the personal development industry, business coaching or that network marketers experience.

Living out in the middle of nowhere I had this bias that only farmers, ranchers other rural folk retained the Love for America and the Entrepreneurial Spirit. I was wrong. While walking the streets of NYC my wife and I noticed both common and unusual businesses being conducted in the oddest and smallest of spaces. The volume and variety of independent businesses was astounding!

This Entrepreneurial Spirit moved America from under the tyranny of England to being the greatest nation in the world. While in NYC I/we noted two apparently universal principles that apply to small business owners like you and I.

The first is Self Determination. Defined in the dictionary;

1. Determination of one’s own fate or course of action without compulsion; free will
2. Freedom of the people of a given area to determine their own political status; independence.

The Second is Capitalism. Defined in the dictionary;

1. An economic system in which the means of production & distribution are privately or corporately owned & development is proportionate to the accumulation & reinvestment of profits gained in a free market.

You and I as business owners – exemplify the core values our nation was built upon. We have chosen to to rely upon a system that rewards us for being both creative and rewards us especially well for being Productive in the market place. We “get to” determine which products we’re most passionate about, we “get to” determine who, when and how we’ll share them with others…by phone, web, or in person..and how often. We “get to” rely upon mentors to show us the way. We “get to” enjoy the rewards of Serving others and Making a Difference in the world everyday. The end result of our efforts is our one true product, the very best product of all; FREEDOM.
