Taking Calculated Risks in the Face of Adversity

Good Morning Team – doing anything significantly big and bold in life requires taking risks.

Take the example of Peter Diamindis > We sent out a press release the very next day saying, “Zero G to fly Stephen Hawking into weightlessness to raise funds for ALS.” I had expected nothing but positive reaction. But what happened next shocked me.  I received two phone calls. One came from our airline partner saying, “You’re crazy. You’re going to be flying this guy who has been in a wheelchair for 40 years and there’s a good chance he might get injured.” The other came from a friend at the FAA who said, “You know the rules under which you are operating require that anyone flying must be certified ‘able-bodied’ and I can’t imagine anyone here would view Prof Hawking as able-bodied.” On top of that, I had a number of people in the commercial space world approach me saying that this was a bad idea, that a major accident could set back everything we had been working toward for decades.

It is very likely that most people would quit at this point.  However, people like Peter and mySelf, my wife and many other successful individuals live by the creed; “There’s always a way“, or “The impossible just takes a little bit longer“.

Because doing anything significantly big and bold in life requires taking risks.  How do you know when to proceed or when to “fold”?
1. If the risk is fully aligned with your purpose and mission, then it’s worth preparing for.

2. You MUST do everything you can to retire as much of the risk as possible.

3.  GO for it!  Because it matters not how many times you get knocked down, as long as you get up one time more.

You are What You Eat

Good Morning Team – “An apple a day…” is no longer accurate. The nutritional content of the fruits and vegetables we eat today are Ten to Twenty times less than the fruits and veggies we ate just 20 years ago. Farming techniques and depleted soil are just two contributing factors. This means that we have to eat more fruits and veggies to get the same nutritional value and therefore it is probably more than just a good idea to take a high quality supplement.

The current USDA recommendation = 2 fruits, plus 3 veggies per day

The current Dr Ken Cooper recommendation = “5 is fine, 9 is divine.”

The current Dr Oz recommendation = 12-15 fruits and veggies per day.

What the World Eats

From the book “What the World Eats” by Peter Menzel whereas he traveled the world and documented what a typical family eats in a week and what they pay. What does your family spend for one week of food?

The Caven Family of California $159.18 for one week.

The Revis Family North Carolina $341.98 for one week.

According to the USDA in 2009 “The average American family of four (married couple with two children) spent approximately $185 per week on food (away and at home). This spending does not buy a nutritious diet.”

According to the USDA in 2010 “By following USDA’s Low-Cost Food Plan, people could save money and consume a healthier diet. The Low-Cost Food Plan is a nutritious diet that in November 2010 cost $175 per week for a family of four (married couple with two children). Contrary to popular opinion that a healthier diet costs more, it is possible for people to eat healthier, including more vegetables and fruits, and spend less on food.”

Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers charge a monthly fee of $25 to $50. per month to be part of their lists and groups and THEN you have to add food $$ on top of that.

A gym or health club membership runs appx the same $25 to $50 per month.

The above info provided because many of the business owners we coach will begin to discuss / promote weightloss over the next 21 days and I/we promise you that those numbers and comparisons will come up.

Remember, whenever someone says X is “too expensive” the only appropriate response is the question; “Compared to what?”
