A recent “Tips from the Top” question; “A rep recently replied to my attempt to motivate them by saying; ” why are you pushing me?” . I was just trying to help, what did I do wrong?
Prospects, reps, sales associates, employees, and maybe even people in general are like a rope…you can’t push it across the table…but you and I can pull it across with ease. So….
First, Is it possible that sentence represents fear disguised as anger? If you’ve ever said that to someone; stop and examine the feeling. Does it stem from a prior experience? Which one? Could there be possibly be another meaning to the prior experience…a more empowering meaning? This is very likely because most of what we remember didn’t actually occur they way we remember it.
Example; interviews regarding an accident at an intersection often show that the people on each of the 4 corners frequently report a different sequence of events and sometimes even different color vehicles or different vehicles! Remember eyes only take in images, the brain then creates the pictures based upon our filters.
Frequently a little thought and introspection will reveal another possible meaning to any event in our lives. Because it’s never what happens to you – it’s always how you interpret it and then respond that matters. Growth & success in life comes from attaching empowering meanings to our experiences…even when we do so many years afterwards!
Second; CEO’s directors, business owners, managers -folks in charge of people – their chief function is to teach/coach. And like any sports coach we can only help the players that show up and are willing to be truly coached…which means they’re willing to learn something new…usually including something uncomfortable and outside their normal behavior. And isn’t it true; the best, most famous, most memorable coaches – teach from experience. Remember.
Finally, this brings me to Movtivation vs Inspiration. By definition “Motivation” comes from the outside and is generally considered to be short term solution. Whereas “Inspiration” comes from within and lasts much longer.
So our goal as leaders is, or should be, more on the “Inspiration” side…helping others discover their talents, purpose and greatness by showing them what we’re doing with our own talents, purpose and greatness. Attached are a couple of clips that may show you the difference in way less time than I could write about it.
Here’s a short clip more on the “Motivation” side. (<5 min) Here's a short clip more on the "Inspiration” side. (<9 min) For more "Tips from the Top" listen to Monday night's calls!
