Labor Day Represents

Observed on the first Monday in September, Labor Day pays tribute to the ontributions and achievements of American workers. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. Labor Day also symbolizes the end of summer for many Americans, and is celebrated with parties, parades and athletic events.

At its’ core Labor Day represents people individually and collectively determining their fate and deciding their destiny. Individuals chose to be part of the movement or not, thus actively determining their future. Like minded individuals collectively determined how they would be governed by employers following a precedent that had been set back in 1776. Their efforts became bigger than themselves and ultimately changed life in our modern world.

As entreprenuers, independent business owners, small business owners – we find ourSelves in a similar position. As individuals we each made a decision to actively make a difference in our life, and the lives of our families and communities – by collectively participating in something greater than each and all of us.

Thus, Labor Day represents you and I – individually and collectively – celebrating our true product – Freedom!

Is your Doctor Burned Out?

Good Morning Team – Very likely. Excerpts, bold emphasis mine

    Is Your Doctor Burned Out?

By Alexandra Sifferlin TIME August 23, 2012

Job burnout can strike workers in nearly any field, but a new study finds that doctors are at special risk. Nearly half of U.S. physicians report symptoms of burnout, with doctors at the front line of care particularly vulnerable, a significantly higher rate than among the general working population.

Overtaxed doctors are at risk for personal problems and their job-related fatigue can also erode professionalism, compromise quality of care, increase medical errors and encourage early retirement..

The new findings, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, showed that physicians in emergency medicine, general internal medicine and family medicine fared worst. “Nearly 60% in those specialties had high levels of burnout,”

The authors also found that physicians worked about 10 hours more per week than other people on average and were much more likely to work extra long weeks of 60 hours or more: 38% of doctors worked at least 60-hour weeks, compared with only 10% of the general population.

More than 40% of doctors reported dissatisfaction with their work-life balance, saying their jobs didn’t leave enough time for a personal life or family, compared with 23% of non-doctors.

Bill’s Note: Burnout is partly what led me to change careers now almost 14 years ago. The best way to first approach your doc with your entrepreneurial adventure is from a “having a life” or “exit strategy”. Every doctor is somebody’s son or daughter, has or had parents, might have a spouse, significant other, siblings or children – and ALL put their pants on one leg at a time. They’re human and they want the same things you do – time with loved ones and the resources to do the things you want to do with loved ones.

She “almost did it”, she “tried”

Good Morning Team – By now you’ve probably heard Diana Nyad stopped her swim just past the half way point. Swimming 54 miles in 43 hours, in the Atlantic ocean, at age 62.

She “almost” did it. She “tried”. She “tried” 4 times over a 53 year period. But, she didn’t actually DO it.

So what did she DO? She held on to her childhood dream of swimming those 103 miles for 53 years. She certainly had births, deaths, illnesses, job changes, car wrecks, wrote 3 books, had careers as journalist, radio show host and trained for hours and hours and hours despite the “stuff” of life.

And she didn’t DO all that alone. For all four of her record swims, and many of her shorter ones, she assembled – attracted – a TEAM of people – like minded individuals who shared and supported her in the pursuit of her dream. Her latest TEAM consisted of 25 people. She also attracted $$$ from sponsors.

Diana did not YET accomplish her dream. But she did DO a lot of things along the way that have and will continue to inspire a lot of people.

Right here, right now this very moment you could make a decision to Go for it, to Be, DO, and Have your dream. Inside you – there is that dream you have been holding on to, yearn for, and ache for. Go for it.

When would now be the very best time in your life to Make a Decision, Take Massive Action and change your physiology, outcome and legacy?

It’s in your moments of decision that your Destiny is created.”

Almost Doing something is

Good Morning Team – Brought to you courtesy of Tom McCarthy, fellow success coach.

    The Greatest Commercial Ever!

by Tom McCarthy

When I have passengers in my car I almost NEVER have the radio on. I started this habit when my kids were young because I wanted to use the time we were together in the car for meaningful conversations. That said, for some reason, I had the radio on when my son and I were on a recent trip. I don’t remember any of the songs we listened to, but I do remember a commercial we heard.

The message in this commercial was so powerful. The commercial was for a charitable organization and the theme was “Remember the time you ALMOST volunteered?” They had several examples like; “Remember the time you almost volunteered to help at the soup kitchen?” and “Remember the time you almost visited elderly people in a nursing home?” Then came the kicker;

ALMOST DOING SOMETHING IS THE SAME THING AS NOT DOING ANYTHING AT ALL!

How True! If you’re like me, I bet there are two or three things a day (important things) that you almost do. The problem is that over time, these things you ALMOST do add up to a life that is ALMOST phenomenal. But remember, being ALMOST Phenomenal is the same thing as not being phenomenal.

What’s one important thing you were ALMOST going to do today? Please take a minute and identify something right now. A tough phone call you really need to make? Something special for one of your friends or family members? Once you identify what it is, in the famous words of NIKE, “Just Do It!”

–Tom McCarthy

Goes along with my favorite corollary from the movie Star Wars;

There is no “try” > there is only “DO” or “NOT DO”

Closing Olympic Comments

Good Morning Team – While the Closing Ceremonies of the Olympics were beautiful, for me the best part of the Olympics will always be the stories behind the medals. Stories of Courage, Endurance, Sacrifice and faith.

And so it was with the Texas Team Training at our home this weekend. The stories that people share are what generates the Power of live events. Sometimes it’s a story shared from a leader at the front of the room, and more often – it’s the stories participants share with each other that leads to someone having a breakthrough moment that makes all the difference. That’s the real magic!

I call it the “light bulb” or “aha moment” that someone has that gives them the drive or the reason to move forward and build their business. I absolutely love witnessing those moments and Julie and I love the privilege of helping to create the environment for those moments to occur.

Olympic athletes have an extreme amount of pressure and physical and mental pains to deal with – for years prior to competition. You and I have many life distractions that can cause us to lose focus – births, deaths, college, weddings, construction, caring for children and aging parents, illness, paying bills, friends, running a household,.. etc. We all have “stuff” going on. It’s what we DO about it that matters, and what we DO is highly dependent upon what we focus on….on our goals and solutions, or the pain, suffering and the apparent unfairness of the “stuff”.

Focus is a huge part of success. Every Olympic athlete referred to it. And this weekend, every participant story relating to success – or failure – mentioned it in some way. Focus.

Focus on your goal, make it much larger, more colorful and more meaningful than any of the “stuff” that might be occurring and write your story of courage, endurance, sacrifice, faith and success.

Lost time is never found again” –Benjamin Franklin
