The waitress and Why we go out to eat

Good Morning Team – The reasons why we go out to eat are as varied as the people. Might be so we don’t have to cook, clean, special occasion, etc. Ever go to a certain restaurant because of a person that works there?

Looking deeper – going out to eat might also satisfy one or more of the Six Fundamental Human Needs.

Certainty – we might choose a place because we’re familiar with the food.
Variety – maybe we’re bored with home cookin.
Significance – the smart waitress will be striving to make us feel important or we feel important when we decide the amount of the tip.
Connection – either just being around people or maybe there’s a staff person we enjoy seeing and speaking with.
Contribution – Spiritual fulfillment comes from Serving Others, tipping well may satisfy this need.
Growth – we learn from every human interaction – what to do or not do.

While the reasons we give for going out to eat may be superficial; it is likely that the event satisfies a deeper need. In our business – people often say they’re starting because they need to make money. Is it just the money? Do people really want to make $3000. per month so they can have 3000 pictures of George Washington for their bathroom wall?? NOT! The real reason is always deeper, what will earning that amount allow the person to BE, DO and Have. Hint: look for the reason to relate to one or more of their 6 human needs.

Remember from Yesterday;

A truly successful waitress knows exactly WHY she’s waitressing. She’ll have nightly, weekly, and monthly dollar goals. She’ll engage customers in conversation by asking them questions like who are they, where are they from, where are they traveling to and WHY. She’ll also ask what kind of food do you like, how do you like it prepared and she’ll LISTEN and then RESPOND by providing just the food and information requested.

In a nutshell, she’ll prosper simply by serving others. And in the process she too will earn multiple degrees in psychology and satisfy one or more of her 6 Fundamental Human Needs – either through the process of working or through what she does with her earnings.

What’s your favorite restaurant and why? Which of your needs are met by eating there?

Your PhD and the Waitress

Good Morning Team – In the process of building your business you’re going to acquire several degrees in psychology. People are funny. They do things that seem silly, weird, illogical, etc. For example;

Go to any med school or law school and you’ll see the drop out rate in just the first few weeks is more than 50%, by then end of the first semester, first year – the number is even higher. And that’s after they fought to get in! As I went thru med school I watched as people dropped out all along the way for many reasons, all “valid” to them. Some even quit during their residency!

Go figure? NOT! Stop wasting your time trying to figure out why people quit or do things that seem silly, weird, or illogical. To them their reasons make perfect sense. It’s part of their life’s journey, their learning lesson….not yours.

Focus more on what successful people DO. Success leaves clues. And truly successful people share their strategies….some of which may seem silly, weird and illogical…..until you DO them and understand WHY.

Be like the waitress. She goes from table to table with a pot of coffee…simply asking “would you like some more coffee?” It’s a yes or no question. If someone says yes, she pours them coffee, maybe engages some chit chat and then moves on. If someone says “no, I’m not interested, or the coffee industry is just a big scam” – she doesn’t run into the kitchen and cry or quit being a waitress. She just moves on to the next table and asks the same simple question…over and over, table after table, night after night until she achieves her goals that caused her to be a waitress.

And if someone says; “We’ll it depends, maybe, what kind of coffee, where are the beans grown, what kind of soil are they grown in, where does the water come from, are they FDA approved?“, etc etc. She’ll call the manager over to answer and/or move on to someone she can help.

And in the process she too will earn multiple degrees in psychology.

Tomorrow – why we go out to eat.

Top 3 Reasons go both ways because

Good Morning Team – Here are the Top 3 Reasons people give for Starting, Not Starting, and Quitting a business. How is it that the reasons for starting are the same reasons they give for quitting?

1. Don’t have enough time
2. Don’t have enough money
3. Spouse, Significant other, relative, or LIFE (Birth, Death, Illness, layoff, Move, other)

What’s the underlying difference? Answer =

Emotion(s). We are emotional creatures first. The part of our brain responsible for emotions is deeper, bigger and stronger than our logical rational brain. Where do emotions come from? Our interpretations and perceptions. Which are based upon limited sensory input (5 senses) and what we’ve learned previously.

For Starting, Not starting, and Quitting the underlying emotion is Fear. Fear mixed with excitement or just fear.

It is well known that we are born with just one innate fear – abandonment, and 2 learned fears – loud noises and falling. All other fears we have are ones we’ve learned. And therefore they can be un-learned. And all “un-learning” comes from having new experiences which are preceded by new thoughts which resulted in new actions which resulted in new experiences.

Therefore, the only known antidote to fear is Action. And the way we move human beings to act is to ask questions that help them find their inspiration or motivation. This is our main tool as coaches, mentors, friends, parents – asking questions.

Example: We ask children “how will you be certain there’s no boogeyman in the dark corner of the room?” Answer = action = “by turning on the light”.

Business Example: We ask new sales reps, business associates WHY they must have more time, more money, more Life and THEN assist them to ACT = make first phone call, invite to a demo, invite to a webinar or business presentation = new experiences = new learning = FUN. Fun like the anticipation of riding a roller coaster and/or the fun of opening presents on Christmas morning or birthday.

Ultimately, people are motivated by either Inspiration or Desperation (emotions). They will DO more to avoid pain than they will to seek pleasure. And they will ACT upon emotions first, THEN they seek to justify or rationalize or their decision.

Tomorrow, your psychology degree and the waitress.

Top 3 Reasons People Quit their business

Good Morning Team – Here are the Top 3 reasons people Quit their business;

1. Don’t have enough time
2. Don’t have enough money
3. Spouse, Significant other, relative, or LIFE (Birth, Death, Illness, layoff, Move, other)

The #1 Reason people Quit…

Time – “takes time away from family, friends, hobbies”

The Truth is: If someone were to get another part time job in order to make more money – they would have to take time away from family, friends, hobbies. They would have to negotiate with family members for the time away, for someone else to do their chores, for the extra use of the car, for the extra expenses associated with clothing, travel related to the other job. And what’s worse is – the time away would not be flexible…they would not be able to say to their new boss – “I’ll be there right after I clean the garage, go to My kid’s game, take care of my sick cat, parent, etc…” So Yes absolutely you must have all those same negotiations when you decide to make the time to build your business. We all have the same 24hours in a day and the great thing is that when you have your own business – you get to decide the business time vs family time.

The #2 Reason people Quit…

Money – They say “can’t afford it” …in other words they fail to see any capital output as an investment in building their business.

The Truth is: Some businesses can be built for free. As an independent contractor – example – real estate agent for Remax – After your initial courses and license fees you’ll have no employees, no overhead, no inventory, no advertising expense. You simply build a network using the very best form of marketing – word of mouth. Another example; there are about a dozen solid, reputable network marketing companies you can start with. Insurance agent, Consultant, etc etc. Only Consistent, Persistent, hard work is required to build a business from the comfort and safety of your home. It’s called NetWORK Marketing.

The #3 reason people Quit…

LIFE – Negative spouse, friend, relative. Too old, too young. Birth, death, divorce, illness, injury, layoff, move, and other life events.

The Truth is: LIFE is WHY we do this business. The same events happen to all of us. Some people use the “events” or “stuff” of life as reasons, excuses to play small, shrink or pull back. Some people let their negative friends and family talk them out of their dreams and goals. You and I use the same “events” or “stuff” as fuel, reasons to expand, grow, excel, succeed, BE, DO and HAVE more. It’s always our choice because;

Life is WHY we do this business – because

It’s NEVER what happens to you – it’s ALWAYS what you DO about it

Tomorrow – How is it that the reasons for quitting are the same reasons they gave for starting?

Top 3 Reasons people start their own business

Good Morning Team – Here are the Top 3 reasons people start their own business;

1. Don’t have enough money or just want more
2. Don’t have any time
3. Now I want to talk to my spouse about it – so we can do something together.

The #1 Reason people start their own business…

Money – They’re attracted to the FREEDOM that comes from having a residual income OR they simply want to make a few hundred to a couple thousand per month that they don’t have to leave their bed or family for. OR they are smart enuff to realize in today’s world unless you have multiple streams of income you and your family are at risk of losing it all.

The #2 Reason people start their own business…

Time – They want more time with family, friends and to do the things they want to do. I had an awesome career as a Sports Doc – and no time to have a life. People who have to punch a clock have even less time to be with family, friends – especially in today’s economy where so many have to work more than one job. Love your job? Great! Love your family more. Owning a business that does not require your daily input allows you to BE, DO and HAVE more.

The #3 Reason people start their own business…

Sometimes a spouse will see owning a business as a way for them to spend more time with their mate…often because their mate works long hours outside the home. Sometimes one spouse starts a business and drags the other along, willingly or unwillingly.
And very often one spouse starts the business, the other sees the potential and takes over.

Tomorrow I’ll share the top 3 reasons people QUIT their business.
